The original French Connection is one of my favorite films of all time. It’s a gritty classic about Detective Popeye Doyle infiltrating the French drug runners that have swept through the Big Apple.
It has one of the most intense and memorable car chases in a movie, which set the standard for cinema in the decades to come (packed with a whopping pow-pow, just like the iconic scene from Steve McQueen’s “Bullitt”).
The French Connection has tremendous acting, sweeping camera shots, and an air of creepily haunting sensibility that lingers with the viewer straight through to the credits.
I can’t bring myself to watch the sequel because the original is so so so darn good, but I’m game for giving the story a read-through. Picked up this vintage print at a general store in upstate New York.
