Nick Hornsby blew me away with this book. I’d been a huge, obsessive fan of the John Cusack film long before I purchased this copy from the local page-bound inkery. I have a tendency to stay away from books where I’ve watched the film first, although I generally try to read the original work first to get an idea of the source material.
High Fidelity is all about Rob Gordon’s Top 5 breakups.
His Top 5 songs.
His Top 5 moments working at Championship Vinyl.
Top 5 everything.
What I love most about his character is that he ranks people, events, etc. in his life to the extent where it almost feels like Rob is curling up with a throwback childhood security blanket.
Some people just need that kind of self-measurement to justify their life decisions and move onward.
(Here comes a dose of witty irony)
If you love any of the following, I can’t recommend this one enough:
1) Music (preferably scratchy vinyl)
2) Love and love lost
3) Being inside your own head
4) The experience of being in your thirties
5) Concerts, talking about music, and organizing your record collection
